Highlights of the May 2024 meeting

West NC Quilt Guild in Henderson, NC May 17th and 18th
Dagmar: quilt show in June by Shady Ladies. In Waynesville Dagmar will post on the Facebook group


Thank you to Marilyn for organizing the Mancuso exhibit and thanks to everyone who donated. Someone else will need to do it next year. Suggest 2 people do it.


Ruth: book for the library. Quilting with a Modern Slant. Talks about history of MQG and stories about different modern quilters. Different techniques. We are missing 2 books: The Modern Quilt by the Book (black cover) and The Line… by Debbie Grifka. Dagmar will share on Facebook.


Barbara: We have a challenge for a traditional block in a modern way. Due in June. Can make 1 block or put up to 5 blocks put together. Trade in for tickets to be used at the December meeting. There will be 2 more challenges throughout the year that will also give you tickets. You have to bring in to the meeting.


Classes:
Teresa’s class is full.
Improv curve classes. 3 openings. By Faye
2 places in paper piecing.
On schedule for the year, Barbara doing a class in November “how to wreck your quilt with quilting. Looking for a quilt top that has not been basted, or worked on. Up to 5 tops are needed.


Meg discussing show in Atlanta in June 6, 7, 8 by East Cobb Quilt Show. It is a good show.
Get in touch with Meg if you are interested. It is a juried show. 350 quilts usually.


Barbara Thrush: Quilted Faith exhibit. September 6th through end of year. Registration forms available. Theme is faith. Exhibit is free and free to exhibit. No cost to place quilt.


Membership: New member Alexa. Showed quilt.


Paige Taylor – next month. She is in our guild.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Strips
Take a photo and turn into abstract art
Developed by Katie Pasquini Masopust. Artful Log Cabin Quilts
Choose a subject. Colors/direction (horizontal, vertical, diagonal, etc.), symmetrical; asymmetrical.
Don’t do –pictures that are blah.
Grid options; random, diamond, open, variable, even perpendicular, wonky
Get your picture. Draw some different grids on tracing paper.
Transfer grid to acetate and draw grid with sharpie and ruler.
Number each piece of the grid.
Enlarge the grid
Fabrics: use your scraps. You want a spectrum of the colors that you are using. Look for values. You only need pieces, not yards. You will be cutting fabric into strips.
Sewing the blocks: take center and make log cabin style Be creative. Oversize the block and then trim to quarter inch border.
Cabbage and circle blocks to create motion.
Quilting: do your own
