Riley Blake Sashing Stash Fabric Challenge

Riley Blake_BW

The Modern Quilt Guild (MQG) has announced another challenge. Being a member in the Greenville Modern Quilt Guild allows you to participate in the MQG challenges.

The fabric will be Sashing Stash, designed by Eleanor Dugan for Riley Blake. Instead of receiving several fat quarters, each participant will get one cut of the variety fabric (3/4 yard). With common quilt shapes like HSTs, flying geese and squares — and a sleek black-and-white color palette — the possibilities with this line are endless!

The signup link for this challenge will be sent to members on Saturday, December 19 at 10am Eastern, 7am Pacific time. There are many more members than available fabric, so sign up early!

For this challenge, the fabric will be sent together in groups to guilds which will then distribute them to the members who signed up for the challenge.

Do you need to change links or do anything?

Not at all.  If you type in www.GreenvilleModernQuiltGuild.blogspot.com you will automatically be taken to the new website address.

Batiking Silk Scarves with Faye Jones

On Saturday, Oct 17th, three of us gathered at Faye's home studio for a silk batik scarf workshop.  Faye ordered the scarves from Dharma Trading Co and prewashed them so they were ready for dyeing.

Now it was decision time...we first had to choose the color for under-dyeing our scarves. This color would determine the color of the shapes in the end.  The dye powder was mixed with a little water and added to the dye bath with a citric acid mix.  We wrung the excess dye from the scarves and microwaved them to set the dye.  The scarves were then rinsed and dried.

Kira, Paige and Jill with our scarves after the first dyeing

On to the soy wax resist...Faye had many shapes from which to choose like ceramic discs, cookie cutters and other found objects.  The soy wax was melted and kept hot in an electric skillet and other small dishes with mug warmers.  We first practiced on newsprint to get the feel of using the stamps and then applied the soy wax to our scarves.  Kira also used a tjanting tool and drew lines connecting her flowers.

Scarves drying after wax had been applied

Once the wax dried, we painted our scarves with a thickened final dye keeping newsprint under the scarves to catch excess dye.  In the next step, we rolled up the scarves along with the newsprint, placed them in a plastic bag and microwaved once more.  The newsprint adsorbed the excess soy wax during the microwaving process.  We then discarded the paper and rinsed our scarves in water removing the excess dye and wax.

Paige applying the final dye

We gave the scarves a final wash in hot water with textile detergent and a rinse with the softener and hung them to dry.

While our scarves were soaking, we ate lunch.  Not only is Faye a talented artist, she is was wonderful cook.  We had turkey noodle soup, bread and cookies, all delicious.

Jill with her beautiful scarf

Kira's beautiful scarf

Faye gave us additional tips and hands-on instruction with other dyeing and stamping mediums.

It was a fun-filled day and we cannot thank Faye enough for her workshop.  Faye encouraged us to see ourselves artists.  After seeing our finished scarves, we truly are artists thanks to Faye!

Faye plans to have a spring batik scarf workshop for those who were not able to attend this workshop.

Program - Overview of Digital Quilt Design

President, Cheryl Brickey, gave an informative presentation on digital quilt design.  She walked us through the steps of designing the traditional churn dash block using Electric Quilt 7, CorelDRAW and MS Office PowerPoint showing us the strengths and weaknesses of each program.  For those asking a questions, they were able to pick out a goodie from the QuiltCon swag that Brenda generously donated.

Reminder - Meeting and Fabric Swap this Saturday (Sept. 12th)

Just a reminder about the upcoming meeting this Saturday...

When: Saturday, September 12th from 1-3pm

Where: The new Bernina Sewing Center

2310-A East North St.
Greenville, SC 29609
864-235-5031
shop@berninagreenville.com

At the September meeting Cheryl will give an overview of Digital Quilt Design using three different methods.

We will also bring back the popular Unloved Fabric Swap.  This swap will be to trade some of your old, unloved fabric for some new fabric!  Bring in fabric you no longer love, you never loved, or has been sitting on your shelves for a decade (or two) without a purpose.

This swap will be super easy, just bring several quarter-yard (or larger) cuts of fabric to swap.  Here are the details:
  • The fabric can be in regular 1/4 yard cuts or fat quarters.
  • Fabric must be "good" quality cotton quilting weight fabric.  Good quality means quilt shop quality or similar quality from JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby, etc.
  • Fabric can be any style: solids, prints, batiks, traditional, modern, floral, plaid, 30's reproduction, etc.
  • Fabric can be washed or unwashed.
  • We are expanding this swap to include any unloved magazines, books, or notions you have.
This swap is totally optional, but I hope everyone participates because it is such an easy swap and it will be much more fun. You might love some of the fabrics others are swapping so make sure you bring some to swap too.  Any fabrics that do not find a new home will be donated for charity quilts.

If you have any questions about the swap, you can add them as a comment on this post or you can e-mail Cheryl at cheryljbrickey (at) gmail (dot) com.

Remember to bring:
  • Show and Shares including your finished stars from last month's paper piecing workshop
  • Fabric for the Unloved Fabric Swap
  • Workshop fee of $15 if you are registered for the Silk Batik Scarf Workshop
The Silk Batik Scarf Workshop is coming up October 17th with Faye Jones.  See the blog post dated August 31st for details and how to register.

See you September 12th!

Reminder - Meeting and Workshop next Saturday - August 15th from 10 am - 3 pm

Just a reminder that we will be having our August meeting next Saturday, August 15th from 10 am - 3 pm (note that this is the third Saturday instead of the normal second Saturday).

Our meeting will be a combined meeting and workshop on paper piecing taught by Darlene.  For the meeting portion of the day, please bring any show and shares and MQG Riley Blake challenge quilts.  After a short meeting we will start the workshop.

What should I bring?
  • Sewing machine of course
  • Open toed foot is best
  • Rotary cutter and mat (small if you have one)
  • Rotary rulers (Small is probably all that you will need.  I will have my one for squaring up if anyone needs it.)
  • A 90/14 needle if you have one.  The larger needle will help to perforate the paper template.
  • A few irons along with small pressing mats.
  • I'm thinking we could put one small pressing mat between 2 people to share.

Fabric requirements
  • You will need less than 1/2 yard of the background fabric.  I would suggest that you bring at 1/2 yard just in case.
  • The rest of the star requires about 1/4 fabric or maybe a bit more.
  • Bring lots of scraps.

Darlene will be bringing copies of the templates.  We WILL finish the block by the end of the day.  We are going to have fun.

Food
The majority voted to buy lunch so please plan to bring about $5 and I (Cheryl) will go out and bring something in for everyone.  You are also free to bring your lunch instead.

  • Binding should be equal front and back with secure stitching
  • Binding should be filled with batting
  • Corners should by mitered and stitched closed
  • Corners should be square and edges straight, if intended
  • Diagonal seams are preferred on binding strips
Paige encouraged everyone to enter their quilts into the next quilt show.  A great opportunity is the Asheville Quilt Show coming up October 2-4, 2015.  There are many categories including Modern Style.  The entry deadline is August 24th.  Your quilt could come home with a ribbon and if not, you will receive constructive feedback on how to improve your next quilt.

  • A 90/14 needle if you have one.  The larger needle will help to perforate the paper template.
  • A few irons along with small pressing mats.
  • I'm thing we could put one small pressing mat between 2 people to share.

LUNCH SURVEY

What would you like to do for lunch?  Please fill out this survey so we can decide what to do for lunch (bring your own, purchase a group meal, potluck, etc.).  We will announce the lunch decision at least a week before the workshop.  Survey link.
