Highlights from the April, 2022 Meeting

Quiltfest Greenville, SC will be held April 28, 2022, at the Greenville Convention Center, 1 Exposition Dr., Greenville SC.  There will be a Trunk Show by the Designer Divas on Saturday at 1:30 pmThe Divas are a group of talented ladies out of Asheville who do all kinds of embellished clothing. For information go to www.quiltfest.com.

Quilt Fest Long Beach, CA, August 4-6, 2022, at the Long Beach Convention Center, is taking entries for exhibit in the following Categories: Art Deco Inspired Quilts, Art Nouveau - Craft as Art, Movies and Musicals: Hooray for Hollywood, and Quilted Comics and SCI-FI. Also the International Quilt Fest in Houston which is November, 3-6 at the George R. Brown Convention Center, is taking entries now with deadlines for entry on May 26th at 1 pm. High sponsorship with cash prizes equaling $54,000. It is a big, beautiful show!  With your MQG membership you should be getting these announcements and, if not, let me know.

Western North Carolina Quilters Guild will present “A Garden of Quilts Show” on Friday, May 20 (10 am – 5 pm) and Saturday, May 21 (10 am – 4 pm). It is being held at the Bonclarken Conference Center in Flat Rock, NC. For GPS use 5 Pine Drive, Flat Rock, NC.  Admission $5. Free parking

 VP – Programs:  Jackie Callis & Darleen Sanford

 Upcoming Programs: 

            May:  Internationally known quilter, designer and author, Marilyn Doheny, will present our program.  Marilyn will conduct an all-day workshop on Saturday, May 14. The cost is $60. If you are interested, contact Jackie Callis (jcallis2@gmail.com.).

Challenge:  Information on this year's challenge will be presented in May.

            August:  Lewis Carl will present a program on the 5 principles of composition and how to create a good grouping.

 Membership:  Jill Erickson

At present the GMQG has 60 members. Twenty-two members and 5 guests attended the meeting. The new directories are here and ready for pick up at the membership desk. Please let Jill know about any errors you may find so they can be corrected for our records. The new rack cards are also completed. To promote our guild, we place them at Marietta’s and Bernina’s shops.  If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.

 

Library:  Ruth Freyer

Ruth is our new librarian.

 

Philanthropy:  Faye Jones

Faye told us about an opportunity to send quilts to the Ukrainian refugees in Poland. Faye is collecting these quilts which will be given to David Timmons (brother of the twins and the Greenville contact who will then deliver them to the Quilted Twins shop in Dade City, Florida.  At our meeting, Faye collected 9 quilts for the Ukrainian refugees in Poland and 8 quilts for Quilts for Kids.

Program:  Ruth Pollow Quilting Journey and Trunk Show

 Ruth shared her early quilt projects and her progress toward using fabric and thread painting to create her fantastic art quilts which often feature birds and other animals.  She emphasized the importance of creating a realistic eye on the animals as a necessary component to give personality and life to her work. She also talked about her use of FMQ to enhance her designs. A few of Ruth's creations:
