June Meeting Reminder

Agenda  for Meeting

  • VPs: Up and coming programs, Fall Challenge: Darlene Sanford and Jackie Callis

  • President Sandy Helsel – July Meeting : Because it is the 4th of July weekend, this will be an informal gathering, ”Make-It and Take-its” will be the theme, and, we will have 4th of July cake! At the June meeting there will be 4 samples of the projects on a table with a sign-up sheet in front of each. The June meeting minutes, and the July meeting reminder, will have pictures of the projects as well. We ask that each of you who will be attending the June meeting, sign-up for the one or two “make-It and Take-Its” in which you wish to participate so that we make enough “kits” in each category. Kits of: cut out fabrics, batting and instructions will be provided. Anyone not able to come to the June meeting, but wishing to participate in the July meeting, should contact Sandy to sign-up for projects. Reply to her email or respond to the Greenville Modern Quilt Guild email address, no later than June 14th..

  • Tools you need to bring to the July meeting include: Sewing machine, (just a small  straight    sewing one is all that is necessary). Small and longer ruler, rotary cutter and small mat; neutral thread (beige, tan or light gray, scissors, pins, disappearing marker.

Highlights from the May, 2022 Meeting

 

From Our President:  Sandy Helsel

 Quiltfest Greenville, SC:  Two of our members, Faye Jones and Valorie Kasten, won a blue ribbon for Best Use of Negative Space in the Mid-Century Modern category.. The quilt, “Nine Mysteries”, was pieced by Faye and quilted by Valorie. Several members who attended the show provided comments on what they liked and disliked about it. We will be contacted in late fall regarding our 2023 participation as a guild. We will not make the decision until called upon in December.

 

Western North Carolina Quilters Guild will present “A Garden of Quilts Show” on Friday, May 20

(10 am – 5 pm) and  Saturday, May 21 (10 am – 4 pm). This exciting show will include a special exhibit of Quilts of Valor, docent tours, arts and crafts vendors, raffle baskets, used book sale, and a boutique of handmade quilted items made by members for sale to the public. The location is the Youth Activities Building located in the Bonclarken Conference Center in Flat Rock, NC, just south of Hendersonville. For GPS use 5 Pine Drive, Flat Rock, NC. Actual address is 500 Pine Dr. Admission is $5 with free parking. Wheelchairs and walkers are welcome.

QuiltCon 2023, Atlanta GA: The MQG will be announcing QuiltCon challenges each Monday for the rest of  May .Watch your inbox on Mondays to learn more about the Community Outreach Quilt Challenge, the fabric challenge, and more!

 

Wildacres Retreat:  Dana Blasi reported that even though only 5 of our members were able to attend the retreat, they had a great time.  Here are the colorful hoop organizers (the mystery project) by the Retreaters!  And, Dana hard at work!

2022 Challenge:  Darleen presented details of this year's challenge which will use the skills we  gained in the March program on improv piecing and are learning with Valorie's BOM. For our Challenge we will be using an orphan block(s) you may have laying around (or put together a simple nine patch, log cabin, etc.). The block(s) will then be cut at least 3 times. These pieces will be used to create a quilt no bigger than 36” x 36” (a medium size wall hanging). The Challenge reveal will be in September.

Program:  Our lecture was “Pick a Shape – Any Shape.....What Shape Are You” by world famous quilt artist, teacher and author, Marilyn Doheny,  This lecture focused on the five universal shapes and the meaning of each one. The shapes we prefer and use as quilters can indicate profound things about ourselves at thar particular time in our life. Below are a few of the quilts Marilyn has made using the Wedge Rulers she invented.  Marilyn will conduct a full-day workshop on Saturday, May,14, from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm at St. Giles Church. All supplies will be provided.  Bring a lunch!  The cost is $60. Contact Jackie Callis, Jcallis2@gmail.com,  for more information or if you wish to attend.
